ADDING A GARBAGE DISPOSAL
Many people like to have a disposal in the kitchen sink. If you plan to install a disposal, think about the many options available before you make your purchase.
Power
For light-duty loads you can get by with a ½ (horsepower) unit. If you do a lot of cooking/cleaning and will be using the disposal every day or even several times a day, buy or 1-hp unit.
Noise
Higher-priced units are quieter because the design includes sound suppression. Most often via a baffle around the grinding chamber, which is where most of the noise conics from. In-Sink-Erator advertises a double baffle. Another noise suppression option is a removable sound plug to cover the grinder opening. The plug does significantly reduce noise, but it is easy to lose. Noise, through vibration, is also transmitted to the sink. The noisiest sinks will be the low-cost thin stainless-steel sinks that do not come with built-in soundproofing. Even if you have a high-end sink, choose a disposal that includes a rubber damper between the sink and the disposal.
Wiring
You cannot tie into the kitchen receptacle circuit. You need to run a new circuit (12-2 NMB with ground). You can hard wire the disposal or take it, via cord and plug, to a receptacle under the counter. It does not need to be GFCI protected. If you have a small disposal ½ h.p., codes may allow you to tie it to the kitchen light circuit, but this is not recommended.
