MORE ABOUT YOUR TRASH COMPACTOR
Unplug first, and check mechanical components if you notice unusual noise. With a compactor, noise is a relative thing. It's not a quiet machine to begin with. For one thing, manufacturers have made little attempt to muffle mechanical noise from the drive assembly. The cycle is short, normally lasting only one to two minutes, and the noise does not become objectionable. Second, it would be next to impossible to hide the noise of bottles breaking, cans flattening and still maintain reasonable cabinet dimensions. Most compactors are serviced either from the back or from the belt! When removing the power nuts or power screws for any lellsoll, be sure to notice the position on all thrust washers and hearings. 'They must be replaced in exactly the same, and the same number or spacers or thrust washers must always be used on the power drive.
Motor components are critical, and only those specified the equipment should be used. The relay or centrifugal switch must up with the motor and should be obtained by model number, listing any information on the motor itself as well. Motors of a higher or lower horsepower should never be interchanged within as this will change the amount of force that is exerted upon in the compartment. Lubrication and adjustments are necessary only when the unit is being repaired. Use only the manufacturer's recommended extreme pressure mol lithium grease for bearings and power screws. Trash compactors are normally sealed and require no lubrication. Chain lubricant 14 usually not needed unless noisy operation develops. Use SAV 111 oil at power nuts and drawer rollers if it is needed. When in proper adjustment, the chain should deflect about ½ inch across any span. If a cogged belt is used rather than the chain should deflect only about 1/8 inch. Both directional switch and lop limit switch should actuate before the ram comes off the power screws, with the ' directional switch actuating approximately 1/4 inch before the limit switch (as measured by ram travel). When you finish a repair job, be sure that no grounds exist before restarting machine.
